What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, also called a cap, is a type of restorative dentistry. The hollow cap is made of porcelain and fits over a natural tooth or dental implant. It looks/functions just like a regular tooth, making it a desirable option for restoration.

What is the point of a dental crown?
Dental crowns repair and save teeth by:
- Restoring function. Teeth become damaged or weakened for a variety of reasons. Whatever the case may be, a crown restores function and prevents further damage.
- Improving aesthetic appearance. Caps can cover teeth that are discoloured, broken, chipped, misshapen, etc. They can also close gaps, restore length, etc.
Why might you need a dental crown?
Patients get caps when a tooth:
- Has a crack and is at risk of breaking further/becoming infected
- Has an old or broken filling
- Loses length due to grinding
- Is weakened from root canal therapy
- Has aesthetic problems like discolouration, stains, etc.
If you are experiencing any issues like these, book your appointment today! We will help you decide if a cap is the best option for you.
Note that we also use crowns for patients with dental implants. In these cases, we insert an artificial root into your jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Then, we cover the root with a cap to restore natural appearance and function.
What does the procedure look like?
Luckily, this is a relatively simple procedure that consists of two appointments.
At the first appointment, we prepare the natural tooth by reshaping it. This creates enough room for the cap to go on.
Then, we take impressions of your tooth. Unlike other offices, we don’t use a messy mould. Our state-of-the-art 3Shape Trios scanner takes quick, accurate scans. The machine sends them right to the lab so you can get your crown as soon as possible.
At the second appointment, we remove the temporary cap put on during the first appointment. We will fit you with your permanent crown and make any necessary adjustments.
What’s the difference between a crown and a bridge?
While related, crowns and bridges serve different purposes. The former covers an existing tooth that is cracked, discoloured, or otherwise damaged.
A bridge, on the other hand, replaces missing teeth. Our dentists fit the teeth on both sides of the gap with crowns, which hold the bridge in place.
You may prefer a bridge over other replacement options like an implant. This is because the former is a much simpler and cheaper procedure. If you think you might benefit from a bridge, book your appointment today!
