TMJ & Jaw Pain Treatment in Quakers Hill
Jaw pain, morning headaches, a clicking jaw, and teeth grinding are often connected. These symptoms can stem from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, from bruxism, or a combination of both. We assess the underlying cause and discuss options to help manage symptoms and reduce damage to your teeth.
What is TMJ disorder?
The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw to the skull on each side of your face, and is responsible for chewing, speaking, and yawning. TMJ disorder (TMD) refers to a range of conditions affecting this joint and the surrounding muscles.
It can arise from jaw clenching or grinding, bite imbalances, injury, arthritis, or habitual muscle tension, often a combination. Stress is a commonly reported contributor.
Signs and symptoms to look out for
- Jaw pain, stiffness, or soreness, particularly in the morning
- Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening or closing
- Headaches, particularly around the temples
- Earaches or a feeling of fullness in the ear without infection
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Teeth worn, flattened, or cracked without obvious cause
How we assess and manage it
Assess
We examine the jaw joints, muscles, and teeth, assess your bite, check jaw opening and any joint sounds, and may take X-rays.
Protect
A custom occlusal splint worn at night reduces the force transmitted to the jaw joints and can ease morning headaches and jaw soreness over time.
Manage
We provide jaw exercises and self-care guidance, and for significant clenching may discuss muscle relaxant injections into the jaw muscle as part of a broader plan.
